Take a Moment to Reflect

Take a Moment to Reflect

May 26, 2025

Memorial Day for many is often a day of barbecues, outdoor activities, and time spent with families. And while I, too, enjoy all of these things, I hope that each of you will take a moment today to reflect on our servicemen and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms and who we celebrate today.

This week, I attended the funeral of a great American and friend who served seven one-year tours of duty in Vietnam. He once descended his tanker into the range of anti-aircraft weapons (against orders) to refuel multiple fighter aircraft that would have run out of fuel in hostile territory, earning a Bronze Star with valor. His selfless act was unknown to me until the day of his eulogy, which is often the way of our selfless military members who put their lives on the line for us day-in and day-out without ever mentioning it again. So, if you can make it happen, tell a veteran thanks for their service. Whether you are out flying today or at home enjoying a cookout with friends and family, please take a moment to give thanks for our military men and women and for their sacrifices.

Today, as I think about those I served with who have flown West and all the others who lost their lives serving our country, I am reminded of this passage from John 15:13: “There is no greater love than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
