Southwest Airlines Pilots Association Elects Captain Casey Murray as New Union President

Dallas-based Captain Murray to succeed Captain Jon Weaks on January 1

(Dallas, Texas) – Captain Casey A. Murray will take office as president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA) for the 2021-2022 term on January 1, 2021. Capt. Murray won the election to lead the Association representing more than 9,000 Southwest Airlines Pilots, running unopposed and receiving 97.6% of the vote in October. A Southwest Pilot since 2007, Capt. Murray will succeed Capt. Jon Weaks, who has served as SWAPA President since January of 2016.

“I’m truly honored to lead this Pilot group as we face an unprecedented challenge in the global pandemic which has devastated the airline industry and impacted the livelihoods of thousands of its workers,” said Capt. Murray. “Our commitment to protecting the professional interests of SWAPA Pilots will not waver while we continue to seek solutions that help our Pilots through this period of uncertainty, as well as through negotiations for a new contract with the Company.”

Capt. Murray has chaired the Negotiating Committee since 2015 and was instrumental in negotiating the current SWAPA Collective Bargaining Agreement signed in 2016. Capt. Murray previously served SWAPA on the Training and Standards Committee and as a member of the Merger and Acquisition Committee. Capt. Murray brings a wealth of experience as a long time SWAPA committee member as well as depth negotiating numerous labor contracts and in the training environment.

“I am confident Casey is absolutely the right person to lead SWAPA through the next phase, and we are fortunate to have had his insight and background in our Association,” said Captain Jon Weaks, outgoing President of SWAPA.

Capt. Murray previously served as a Pilot and Check Pilot for Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA). He holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from The John Marshall Law School, as well as a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota. He is based in Dallas and resides in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
